When Procurement Is Stuck in Tactical Mode

Many procurement teams within GBS organisations are doing the basics well. Orders get processed, invoices get paid, and suppliers generally deliver what they have been asked to deliver. But the function is not being used to its full potential.

Strategic sourcing requires a different set of skills from transactional purchasing. It requires the ability to analyse spend data across the whole organisation, develop category strategies that reflect market dynamics, manage complex supplier relationships, and negotiate contracts that deliver long-term value rather than just short-term savings. Most procurement teams have not been trained to do these things, which means the GBS organisation is leaving significant value on the table.

What This Course Covers

The Strategic Sourcing course is a core component of Inixia’s Professional GBS Certification programme and is also available as a standalone customisable workshop under the title Professional GBS Strategic Sourcing: How to Best Source Your GBS Work.

The course addresses the full spectrum of sourcing decision-making within a GBS context, from spend analysis and category strategy through to vendor selection, contract management, and ongoing supplier performance. Participants develop the analytical skills to understand where the organisation’s money is going, the commercial acumen to negotiate terms that reflect total cost of ownership rather than purchase price alone, and the relationship management capabilities to build supplier partnerships that generate long-term value.

The programme is built on frameworks developed through decades of practitioner experience in large, complex global organisations. All sessions are interactive and led by specialists who have built and operated GBS procurement functions at scale.

What Participants Leave With

Participants learn how to conduct a comprehensive spend analysis that gives them a clear picture of where the organisation’s money is going and where the biggest opportunities for improvement sit. They learn how to develop category strategies that build deep market expertise and lead to better supplier selection and negotiation outcomes.

The course covers the full RFx process, from designing an RFP that will generate genuinely useful responses to evaluating suppliers objectively and making selection decisions that the business can stand behind. It also covers negotiation techniques that focus on total cost of ownership rather than just purchase price, and vendor management approaches that build the kind of supplier relationships that deliver ongoing value.
